Just Transition Regional Coordinator

Scinergy Pacific undertook a comprehensive scoping study to assess the energy transition needs of Majuro, Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI). The study aimed to evaluate grid capacity, identify renewable energy (RE) opportunities, and align energy transition strategies with national and regional objectives. The project involved stakeholder consultations, site visits, and technical assessments to support the development of a framework for the Just Transition initiative in the Pacific.

Project Overview

The study commenced with a desktop review of existing policies, regulatory frameworks, and energy sector plans. This phase involved analysing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and renewable energy roadmaps. Scinergy Pacific then conducted field visits to Majuro, engaging with government agencies, utilities, development partners, and local communities to gather insights into the challenges and opportunities for RE deployment.

A key component of the study was the assessment of Majuro’s grid infrastructure, including power generation, transmission, and distribution systems. The analysis examined system reliability, grid stability, and the feasibility of integrating variable renewable energy (VRE) sources such as solar PV and wind. Additionally, the study explored land availability constraints, recommending floating solar PV as a potential solution to address space limitations.

Scinergy Pacific also conducted economic and financial analyses to evaluate investment requirements, tariff impacts, and potential cost savings from transitioning to RE. The study included scenario modelling to assess the long-term sustainability of various energy transition pathways.

Capacity-building initiatives were another critical aspect of the study, with Scinergy Pacific providing training and technical assistance to local stakeholders. The final deliverables included a technical assistance report outlining the statement of requirements (SoW) for implementing the energy transition framework, along with recommendations for future interventions to achieve RMI’s renewable energy targets.
